Lima 2011, Day 3: USA dominates with three victories
After the first three days of the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships, being held in Lima (PER) until August 21, the high-level of preparation of the athletes and the consequent improvement of their performances is now confirmed. Six additional Championships records were established in the “Campo de Marte” aquatic complex, confirming the success of this competition.
In the third day of finals, United States won its gold medal number five with Evan Pinion’s victory in the men’s 800m freestyle, first event of the night. Evan (1994, 7:55.92) broke the championships record established in Monterrey 2008 (8:01.77). Italy earned silver and bronze medals, respectively with Gabriele Detti (8:00.95) and Gregorio Paltrinieri (8:02.06).
Ukraine’s Daryna Zevina (1994) came back to the top of the podium to receive the gold medal for her brilliant performance in the women’s 200m backstroke. She clocked 2:10.43 and set a new championships record. The owner of the previous time, 2:11.45, was Miyu Otsuka (JPN, 1994), the silver medallist in 2:11.02. Karley Mann (GBR, 1994, 2:11.40) concluded in third place.
Davis Maclin (USA, 1993, 53.24), Kenta Hirai (JPN, 1994, 53.40) and Arthur Mendes Filho (BRA, 1993, 53.96) were the three best in the men’s 100m butterfly. Arthur was the first South American swimmer with a medal in this edition of the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships.
The last event of the day in Lima consecrated Lia Neal (USA, 1995, 54.90) as winner of the women’s 100m freestyle, beating her own championships record of the previous day (55.18). Canadian Chantal Van Landeghem (1994, 55.29) and Australian Bronte Campbell (1995, 55.46) were the silver and bronze medallists.
