The USA found itself in an unusual predicament, fighting to stay in the competition after two far-from-convincing matches, both lost. It needed not worry as the experience in the USA team far outweighed that of the South Africans. The USA now goes to the top 12 in an appointment with Canada while South Africa will do battle with Brazil in the round of 13-16. The USA was relentless in its desire for goals and captain AZEVEDO scored twice in the opening period. HUTTEN scored consecutive goals in the second before STEWART registered South Africa’s first goal at 8-1 with a bouncer on extra. AZEVEDO added three more in the third period as the score marched to 14-1. BELL stopped the rot, slightly with a goal on extra at 5:55 and 16-2. HUTTEN gained a third in the next spurt of USA goals and the goal ended with MOLYNEUX score from close in on the final buzzer. The USA shot at 69% compared to RSA’s 15%.
