Italy looked the classier opponent, a team willing to take the quick shots and reap the rewards. The USA looked a little more pedestrian with the decision-making process in comparison, allowing the agile Italians to fill the laneways. Italy rode the luck, took chances and put doubt into the North Americans’ minds. FELUGO was the playmaker for the Italians. He opened the scoring and in the third period he took the team to two ahead with a slow, deliberate shot from nine metres on the free throw for 5-3. BEAUBIEN scored the USA’s only goal of the second period and HUTTEN opened the third to bring the game to 3-4 but FELUGO started a roll that saw GITTO from six metres and AICARDI with a goal from centre forward for 7-3 seconds from the final break. AICARDI deftly pushed off his opponent to gain the advantage but it was so subtle. At four goals down, the Beijing Olympic silver medallist looked gone for all money but ALEXANDER converted extra with a cross-cage shot that bounced off the right upright into goal at 5:35. The USA was still in the hunt for a first win in Shanghai. GITTO then scored perhaps the best goal of the game when he took a pass from GALLO across the two-metre line, turned to his left and planted the ball in the back of the net from his post position on extra, putting the game beyond the USA’s reach. AZEVEDO scored his third goal of the tournament and first for the match when he took the USA’s third shot in succession at 2:07. Despite a timeout each, neither side could score and the USA will be looking for a win over South Africa on Friday to advance. Italy faces Germany in the group decider.
