The tightest match of the tournament so far, played between two teams of equal strength, was resolved in favour of the home team after penalty shootouts. Italy prevailed in the first half of the while Croatia’s supremacy materialised in the second half. On the score of 8-8 at the end of the regular time penalty shootouts were required. Italy was first, and all five Italian players converted their penalty; Croatia’s second shooter Dobud missed his own, therefore the last shooter from Croatia was unnecessary. It was the first victory of Italy over Croatia in the latest two years. Last year the two team met in the European Championships final and Croatia won.

1st period: Thirty seconds after the start Italy’s #6 and captain Maurizio Felugo opened the score shooting centrally an impromtu lob shot from the long distance. 5:20 Fiorentini followed up with an extra-man goal from two metres (Boskovic was excluded). At 4:49 the same Boskovic scored the first goal for Croatia, also on extra-man. An action goal from Perez put Italy up two goals. At 1:56 to the end of the period left handed Gallo scored again for Italia on a break away action. With 16 seconds to the end of the period Buric reduced the gap on extra-man (4-2).

2nd period: Italy up three goals with Figlioli, also on extra-man (5-2). At 4:46 Giorgetti from two metres, scored on a lob shot after getting rid of his opponent with a nice dribbling (6-2). On the other front Tempesti, the best goalkeeper of the tournament, represented an almost insurmountable  barrier for the Croatian players. But at 2:07 Boskovic scored his second goal, on action (6-3); a controversial goal as a corner for Italy was not allowed.

At half-time Serbia led 5-1, with four goals scores on superiority: Dusko Pijetlovic and Gocic in the 1st period, Mitrovic and Nikic in the second period. The third goal for Serbia in the 1st period was scored on a breakaway action from Andrija Prlainovic, followed soon after by a goal from Alexander, the only one scored by the USA in the first part of the game, also on action.
