OWS clinic makes a difference in Suva (FIJ)
An Open Water Swimming clinic for Coaches and Officials (beginner and intermediate levels) was held in Suva, Fiji, from March 19-23. More than 40 participants attended the course, which was led by Kiwi expert Philip Rush. New Zealand's open water swimming Head coach since 2008, Rush is also the Youth development manager at NZ Swim.
During the theory sessions, many topics were discussed: how to evaluate a race-swimmers strategy; technique, starts, turns and finishes; race skills; swim prep and drills for open water; basic open water swimming and looking after your swimmer; swimmer safety with open water swimming; managing your swimmer and event.
The participants tested their newly-acquired skills during a 5km ocean race (there was also a 2-hour pool session every day).
