Shanghai 2011 - Water Polo - Special Information
We would like in particular to draw your attention to Section 4.2 titled "Pool Deck Equipment" and request adherence to all clauses therein.
1.1 Women’s Water Polo Competition:
All participants must wear swimsuits/costumes (wide straps, high legs, zip back) with underwear beneath the suit. No other swimsuits/costumes will be permitted to be worn. Please see attached example of the swimsuit/costume to be worn.
All participants must wear swimsuits/costumes of the same colour and design.
1.2 Men’s Water Polo Competition:
Players shall wear non-transparent costumes or costumes with a separate undergarment and before taking part in a game shall remove any articles likely to cause injury.
2. WATER POLO CAPS
Caps shall be of contrasting colour, other than solid red, as approved by the referees, but also to contrast with the colour of the ball. A team may be required by the referees to wear white or blue caps. The goalkeepers shall wear red caps. Caps shall be fastened under the chin. If a player loses the cap during play, the player shall replace it at the next appropriate stoppage of the game when the player’s team is in possession of the ball. Caps shall be worn throughout the entire game.
2.2 Country Code and National Flag:
Caps shall be numbered on both sides with numbers 0.10 metres in height.
Water polo caps must display on the front the three (3) letter country code and may display the national flag. The country code shall be 0.04 meters in height.
2.3 Advertising rules:
One (1) manufacturer’s logo of a maximum of 20 square centimetres is permitted on the caps. No other advertising name or logo shall be permitted on the caps.
2.4 Set of caps:
All participating teams are required to have available one or two additional sets of water polo caps, to be the same as one used in the competition.
3. TEAM BENCH
3.1 Number on bench:
A total of nine (9) persons only will be allowed on the team bench, namely three (3) officials and six (6) substitutes.
Please note that no other persons will be allowed on the pool deck.
3.2 Dress on bench:
All officials must be attired similarly in official team uniform. Please note that shorts and/or sport uniforms will not be allowed.
- One (1) manufacturer’s logo of a maximum size of 30 square centimetres when worn.
- One (1) flag and one (1) country name or code of a maximum of 30 square centimetres when worn.
- One (1) sponsor’s logo of a maximum of 30 square centimetres when worn.
4.2 Pool Deck Equipment:
Two (2) advertising identifications of which one shall be of the manufacturer logo and the other one of the sponsor logo are permitted, with a maximum size of 40 square centimetres each when worn for any of the clothing items listed below, and a maximum size of 6 square centimetres each for any of the accessories and equipment items listed below.
For upper-body clothing items only, the manufacturer’s logo (being a design mark of maximum of 8cm in width) may additionally be displayed in the form of a strip in one of the following positions:
a) Around the bottom of both sleeves; or
b) Centred down the outer seam of both sleeves (from the collar across the top of the shoulders down to the bottom of the sleeve).
For lower-body clothing items only, the manufacturer’s logo (being a design mark of maximum of 8cm in width) may additionally be displayed in the form of a strip centred down the outer seam of both legs (from the waistband down to the bottom of the leg).

4.3 Body Advertisement:
Body advertisement is not allowed in any way whatsoever.
Each competitor at World Championships and FINA competitions must wear on the chest over their tracksuit such advertising as supplied by FINA when being introduced prior to the start of each event and during the victory ceremony.
Identification on clothing must be placed on the top breast side so that Bibs requested by FINA may be worn well visible below.
We kindly remind you that any advertising identifications which are not indicated in these regulations are not permitted. In the event that any clothing contravenes these regulations, the competitor must immediately remove the offending item(s) and replace it/them with clothing that complies with FINA rules (BL 7.1.6).
After the experience of the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome, where many teams where not following the FINA rules on clothing, we would like to draw your attention to the fact, that there will be strict checking made before each game during these Championships.
FINA reserves the right to request National Member Federations taking part in FINA Championships and Competitions to present any clothing item to be used at the competition venue for examination and approval of FINA prior to the event in question (BL 7.1.7.).
