French stars shine in Genoa
European champion in the 400m freestyle, Yannick Agnel debuted in style over the same distance at the “Nico Sapio” Trophy (short course). The French swimmer coached by Fabrice Pellerin clocked 3:42.31, close to the world season's best, resisting the onslaught of Italian middle-distance swimmer Federico Colbertaldo, who stopped the clock at 3:45.19.
Camille Muffat (FRA) dominated the women's race all the way and although she sped up in the last 50 meters, the Frenchwoman was not able to go below the four-minute mark. Her time was 4:00.30.
50m breastroke European champion, Fabio Scozzoli (ITA), produced a great performance, easily winning the 100m in 58.92. This places him at the top of the continental rankings.
Moreover, a fascinating battle took place in the men's 100m backstroke between American Nick Thoman and Damiano Lestingi from Italy, which ended in favour of the first (52.20 vs. 52.59). Another thrilling fight unfolded in the men's 100m freestyle, where the French Gregory Mallet powered home in a winning time of 48.69, beating American Schneider (48.86) and Calvi from Italy (49.43).
