FINA 10km MSWC 2010: Magic of Cancun for Race 7
On October 9, the best swimmers in the world will be on the beautiful beaches of Cancun, to participate in the 7th leg of FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup 2010. It is a very important event for the Government of Mexico because this marathon race in the waters of the Mexican Caribbean will celebrate the bicentennial of the Independence of Mexico.
The Mexican Swimming Federation is entrusted to organise this year its third international event, the second in open water, after the Grand Prix Sumidero Canyon (15 km) and two FINA Diving World Series meets in Veracruz. Cancun will host the event, which involves a 10km race with the assistance of the best swimmers in this new Olympic discipline, which made its debut in the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008.
In 2010, the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup have been held in Santos (BRA), Viedma (ARG), Setubal (POR), Lac St. Jean (CAN), Shantou (CHN), Hong Kong (HKG), continues on October 9 in Cancun (MEX) and ends in Sharjah (UAE) on October 23.
The Mexican team's spearheads include Odette Saldivar, Alejandra Gonzalez, Zaira Cardenas, Luis Escobar, Ivan Lopez, Daniel Ortega and Rodrigo Elorza, who have had open water experience in World Championships, World Cups, Grand Prix, among other international events.
From the beach of Hotel Be Live Viva Cancun, the competitors will complete four laps of a 2.5 km circuit. The Mexican Caribbean waters that day are expected to have a temperature of 29-30 degrees Celsius. The competition will be governed under the guidelines of the FINA open water and will have medical, technical and security required for an event of this level.
The FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup adds to the importance of water sports in the Bicentennial celebrations of Independence to Mexico, and in parallel in Mexico City will be held the Olympic Festival at the Bicentennial Walk Reform, featuring diving, swimming, water polo and synchronised swimming, with Michael Phelps' (USA) amazing visit confirmed for the event.
