PR29 - Mitcham (AUS) prevents complete gold sweep for China
Like at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing (CHN), Matthew Mitcham (AUS) was the only non-Chinese winner during the 17th edition of the FINA Diving World Cup, organised in Changzhou (CHN), from June 2-6, 2010.
China blitzed to win half of the 24 medals on offer, including seven gold, to the delight of the home crowd. The remaining gold went to Mitcham, in the 10m platform event. Other nations to make the podium counted Russia, the United States, Ukraine, Cuba, Mexico and Canada.
In the men’s field, the powerful Chong He (CHN) successfully defended his title in the 3m springboard while teammate Kai Qin repeated his feat from the 2008 World Cup edition by taking silver in the 3m springboard and gold in the 3m springboard synchro.
In the women’s competition, rising diving star He Zi obtained the first crown of her career in the 3m springboard and also reached the highest podium with teammate Wu Minxia in the 3m springboard synchro. Yadan Hu was the best in the 10m platform.
For the first time in a FINA competition, a team event was held on an experimental basis, and the victory went to David Boudia/Haley Ishimatsu (USA).
